2022 Data

In the 2021-2022 school year, we met children and families who were excited to be back at school! As the community emerged from Covid 19 with many safety regulations in place, we welcomed new children three and four years old. Many of these children had not seen other people or been away from their family members ever. The children and families were scared of getting sick and being apart from each other.

The school year held challenges for everyone – a flood in Chirilagua, the departure of our Executive Director, and rolling quarantines throughout the fall and winter. Through it all, our community came out stronger. The families developed a trust in our team. The children made amazing progress across all domains.

Looking at the charts, it evident that children were below developmental expectations and very few exceeded those milestones. By the Spring of 2022, every child made remarkable progress in all areas. When looking at the social emotional growth throughout the year, the graph shows that there were 47 children demonstrating skills below expectation age levels. By the end of the year, only 15 children still lagged behind. With this data, CFNC was able to make some vital decisions:

  • Add a third teacher to the classroom to support individual learners as behavior is guided for others.
  • Increase the investment in social emotional learning for teachers through reflective supervision and trauma informed care workshops.
  • Renew our work with AL’s Pals Social Emotional Curriculum to add large and individualized lessons for key concepts in emotional regulation and social skills.

CFNC used the data from multiple sources to make a better community for our children and families. The data from last year demonstrated:

Changing demographics: a growing Afghan community and a need for speakers of Dari (demographics collected by CFNC);

A. Result: hired a family support worker and teaching staff fluent in Dari

Increased range developmental needs among all children. The developmental range of a multi age, 3 and 4 year old classroom may be from 30 months – 65 months (using the expectations from the Ages and Stages Questionnaire).

B. Result: added a third teacher to all classrooms so each child could have individual needs met.

The 10 month academic growth in the children is consistent and children meet or exceed developmental expectations for the three and four year old age range. (as based on Gold Assessments, Pals, EMAS, and CBRS)

C. Result: continue to build teaching practices around high quality interactions and advanced language (CLASS)

Increased incidents of extreme emotion in children in the classroom. (CFNC data from behavior and incident reports)

D. Result: Activate a trauma informed, tiered response to behavior incidences in the classroom. Collect comprehensive data around triggers and causes of incidents. Our partnerships in the community continue to strengthen and we are a member of a collaborative community in the City of Alexandria. (CFNC Partnership activity)
