• CFNC Alumni: Where are they now?

    January 19, 2018 Lisa Carter
Nothing warms our hearts at CFNC more than reconnecting with former students. So when we got in touch with Angela Lankford back in December and heard her story, we knew we wanted to share it with  you, too. In 2018, we're making it goal to reconnect with as many alumni as possible. One question we get asked a lot is - "where are your students now?" Our goal for 2018 is to find out, and share those stories with you. Oh, and one more thing you should know about Angela - not only is she a former student. She's a…
  • Alexandria Community Spreads Holiday Cheer to CFNC Students

    January 3, 2018 Lisa Carter
Every December, CFNC looks to individuals, businesses, and organizations to host holiday parties in our eight classrooms to help spread some holiday cheer to our students. All of our students make a wishlist of what they want, and our incredible partners in the community will collect the gifts, plan holiday crafts, and bring delicious treats into the classroom. Some groups even brought a real Santa Claus to hand out gifts! Like our classrooms, each party was wonderfully unique. One group did a holiday themed puppet show, another group planned game stations that included wrapping their CEO in toilet paper! In…
  • CFNC Parents Prepare for Parent-Teacher Conferences

    December 7, 2017 Lisa Carter
On Friday, December 1, CFNC held its first Parent Workshop of the 2017-2018 school year. Every year, CFNC holds five Parent Workshops on topics that are relevant to our families. This workshop was about our upcoming parent-teacher conferences and helping our families know what to expect and how to be prepared. For many of our families, these upcoming parent-teacher conferences are the first they will have attended, so knowing what to expect before they arrive, will help them get the most out the experience. At the upcoming parent-teacher conferences, our teachers will be sharing details about their child's education including:…
  • Vision Screenings are Underway!

    November 21, 2017 Lisa Carter
The month of November is almost over and we are almost done with our vision screenings! Good vision is essential for academic success and vision screenings help identify vision problems early. If an issue is addressed during a vision screenings, our social workers work with our families to make sure that the student gets the extra care he or she needs. In addition to our vision screenings, our students also receive hearing, dental, and developmental screenings to make sure all of our students are happy and healthy! Last year, as a direct result of our vision screenings, 22 of our students…
  • CFNC Coat Drive Keeps Kids Warm for the Winter

    October 27, 2017 Lisa Carter
Though Fall has been here for a few weeks now, the leaves are changing colors and the weather is (finally) getting colder. That means that appropriate winter clothes are so important for our students. Many of CFNC students walk to school, which means without the proper winter attire, those students are at an increased risk of frequent absences. That’s why every year, CFNC hosts a winter coat drive. We are always amazed by the community’s response and unwavering generosity. Countless individuals, businesses, and organizations have participated this year to ensure that every single one of our 138 students have the…
  • Sponsor Spotlight: Applied Policy

    October 11, 2017 Lisa Carter
Applied Policy, a health policy and reimbursement consulting company, recently joined the CFNC family as an Adopt-A-Classroom sponsor when they adopted the Wheeler 1 classroom for the 2017-2018 school year. CEO and President Jim Scott and along with Senior Vice President John Voorhees, are two local business leaders who are committed to improving the lives of Alexandria’s low-income children. It is because of Applied Policy’s generosity, passion, and commitment that the 18 children and two teachers in Wheeler 1 will have all of the materials they need for the entire school year. We wanted to learn more about Applied Policy’s…
  • Thanks For All the Supplies!

    September 20, 2017 Lisa Carter
Over the summer, we held our annual School Supply Drive - collecting much needed school supply items for our teachers and students. Our goal is to stock each classroom with all the materials they will need for the entire year, allowing our teachers and students to focus on the lessons and learning, and taking away the pressure of limited supplies. The response this year was overwhelming - how immensely lucky we are to be part of such a great community. Churches, individuals, and corporations all came out to support Alexandria's low-income preschoolers. Without the support of the community, our students…

  • CFNC Celebrates the First Week of School!

    September 11, 2017 Lisa Carter
Tuesday, September 5 was the first day of school and we finally welcomed a brand new group of students into our classrooms for the year. For almost all of our students, this is their very first time in the classroom. For some, it’s their first time being around other children outside of their family. It’s a big change for them, and the first day often brings some tears. Each day, the tears die down and it becomes easier and easier to let go of family members and jump into the school day. This year, CFNC is serving 138 children across…
