• A Message from a Relay for Pre-K Fundraising Superstar

    September 17, 2018 Anna Shults
Relay for Pre-K is less than a week away and our teams are on a roll! While we’re so impressed with everyone’s efforts during Relay for Pre-K, one team has stood out by going above and beyond. Ahmad Immigration Law & Friends has raised an amazing $1,130 so far and show no signs of slowing down! We reached out to team member, Erin Schmidt, to find out what inspired her to get involved in Relay for Pre-K. “My husband Yusuf and I started the Ahmad Immigration Law & Friends relay team because we know how difficult it can be for…
  • Introducing Mary Taverner, CFNC’s New Family Services Manager

    September 13, 2018 Anna Shults
Over the summer, CFNC wrapped up our strategic planning process, which will guide our strategy and decision making for the next three years. As part of that strategic plan, CFNC will strive to continuously provide high quality services to families and children. With the needs of our families at the forefront, CFNC hired a new family support manager to build on our already fantastic family support team. And we’re so glad we did, because not only are our children and families  receiving the critical support services they need, but CFNC gained an amazing new member of the family. Enter, Mary…
  • Weekly Round Up 9/4 – The Boys and Girls are Back in Town!

    September 10, 2018 Maggie K
Week one was fun, but we're glad it's done!   September 5 was the first day of school for our students at CFNC. Like any first day of school for little ones, we had a few tears (from kids and from parents!). But mostly, 8 classrooms got into the swing of things without missing a beat. Miss Brenda and Miss Marina welcomed their children with a tasty breakfast, while other classes like Miss Tiffanie’s and Miss Katharine’s let the kids get used to the classroom and their new peers by laying out some toys and blocks on the carpet. When…
  • Weekly Roundup: Teachers are Back in Action!

    August 31, 2018 Maggie K
At CFNC, we’re always looking for the best ways to keep you up to date about what’s happening, both in the classroom and the office. With school kicking off in just 5 days (September 5th – whoa!) we’re trying something new! Each week, we’ll do a “weekly roundup” so you can see the inner workings of our organization. From teachers implementing new activities that align to our new curriculum, to volunteer events, to CFNC out in the community, we’ll share as much as we can.   All you need to do is read and enjoy. If you have any friends…
  • Meet Allison

    August 24, 2018 Anna Shults
When Allison started at CFNC, she was terrified. She had never been inside a classroom setting, and cried hysterically when leaving mom’s side each morning. Her anxiety kept her from talking in class and making friends. Sometimes school made her so nervous, she would get sick. Allison’s teachers, social worker, family, and outside resources worked together to get Allison the support that she needed. With specific strategies in place just for her, Allison slowly opened up. In November, Allison stuck close to her teacher’s side, and rarely participated in class. By April, Allison could be found playing dress up with…
  • Meet Zayna

    August 24, 2018 Anna Shults
It’s simple. An unhealthy child isn’t at their fullest potential to learn and grow. And we don’t just mean a sick child – we mean a child who can’t see, who might have hearing issues, a tooth ache, speech or developmental delays, or even has poor eating habits. CFNC’s goal is to knock down as many barriers as possible for our students so that they can focus on reaching their full potential and grow up as happy, healthy, and intelligent people. That’s why our health and wellness program is so important. If you’ve visited our classrooms at any point in…
  • Meet Caspian

    August 24, 2018 Anna Shults
Many of CFNC’s students start the school year far below the developmental range for literacy skills. If you met Caspian today, you’d never guess that he was one of those students. In September, Caspian could hardly recognize the alphabet, make letter sounds, or write his name. At the beginning of the year, Caspian’s absences were frequent. His mom, a single mother of five children (Caspian being the youngest), had difficulty finding reliable transportation to get Caspian to school every day. CFNC noticed these absences, and instead of giving warnings to the parent, Caspian’s teachers, family support worker, and CFNC’s Program…
  • See What’s Been Happening This Summer at CFNC!

    August 10, 2018 Anna Shults
A lot has been happening at CFNC this summer. From reinstating our summer program, to planning the first annual Relay for Pre-K event, needless to say we’ve been pretty busy. Here are some of the things we’ve been up to this summer in case you missed it! Summer Program This summer, CFNC had enough funding to reinstate a Summer Program for some of our students who needed a little extra help before entering kindergarten. We kept them busy this summer! They visited the Smithsonian Air and Space museum, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the US Botanic Gardens,…
