On May 8th, 2018, The Child and Family Network Centers (CFNC) was honored to have Virginia State Senator Adam Ebbin and Virginia State Delegate Mark Levine visit two of CFNC’s eight preschool classrooms.
We discussed the importance of early education, especially for at-risk children. Ebbin and Levine were able to see firsthand how important preschool is for children from low-income families in Alexandria.
CFNC provides early education for 138 children living at or below 250% of poverty. It is extremely difficult for these families to access reliable, high-quality childcare and early learning without CFNC. And CFNC can’t operate without funding from the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI). At a rate of $3,062.50 per child, VPI provides about ¼ of the funding necessary to educate one child.
“Thank you both and the VA Assembly for calling for an increase in the per pupil rate for the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI),” said The Child & Family Network Centers Executive Director Lisa Carter. “We truly appreciate your efforts to increase the state’s investment in educating young children. “
While visiting CFNC, Sen. Ebbin read “Rooster Off to See the World” by Eric Carle to the children and Del. Levine helped students complete a puzzle. Sen. Ebbin took office in 2012 after having served eight years as a Virginia State Delegate. Now, as a State Senator, he is a member of the School Readiness Committee ensuring children in Virginia are ready for kindergarten.
Del. Mark Levine, was elected in 2015 to the Virginia House of Delegates. He is an advocate for women and children in the state of Virginia and when asked about education, he said that universal Pre-K, ‘is the foundation for all education.” He is also committed to helping struggling families.
Thank you to both of you for your support of early education and CFNC.
