The End to an Incredible School Year

June 29, 2017 Lisa Carter

The 2016-2017 school year is officially over, we couldn’t be prouder of what the children and their families have accomplished. Thank you to all of our supporters over the past school year for all you’ve done to give these children the tools they need for success in kindergarten. For most, it was their first year in a classroom setting. On top of their rigorous academic learning, 136 kids improved their social and emotional skills and developed a school routine away from their family. All of these skills allow our students to enter kindergarten on par with their peers.  When CFNC students enter kindergarten, they will be prepared. They are ready for the fall.

Fall: To kick off an exciting year in the fall, the children received their very own backpack filled with supplies; they were ready to roll! Thank you to all of our extremely generous supply drive donors – you set every child up for success in September, and stocked their classrooms full of necessary materials. (If you’re interested in participating in our drive this year, contact Anna Shults September is assessment month, and our teachers evaluated all students to get a baseline level of their abilities and schools. From there, we’re able to see their academic growth. Even their artwork improves dramatically – from squiggly lines in September to families, houses, and space ships in May.

In November, we had our annual Turkey Drive. Thank you to Westminster Presbyterian Church and Booz Allen Hamilton, the families at CFNC received boxes filled with delicious Thanksgiving goods like corn, stuffing, and of course a giant turkey. Each person left with a full heart–and belly!

The children were also able to have a hearing and vision screening in November with the help of Lions Club, and a speech screening done by George Washington University; some of them getting one for the first time. Dr. Alain Semelou-Tema generously donates his time to offer dental screenings and a protective fluoride treatment for all CFNC students each year to keep their smiles shiny and bright!

Winter: Learning continued throughout the Fall and we wrapped up our second quarter around the New Years. As the holiday and winter season rolled in, the classrooms at CFNC were nothing but joyous. Thank you to our many generous holiday party sponsors and donors for supplying CFNC children with gifts, holiday cheer, and treats. You truly brightened their holidays.

In February, PNC sponsored a field trip for the kids to the Air and Space Museum. The children were fascinated by the exhibits and had a blast! We cannot thank PNC enough for such an amazing experience.

Spring: The school year came to a close with our Year End Celebration. All of the staff, students, and their families gathered to celebrate all of the achievements the kids made. After weeks of practicing, the children were both nervous and excited for the ceremony. They performed songs, danced, and ate delicious food. We are so proud of them and the terrific progress they have made over this past year!

Finally, throughout this school year, sponsors, donors, and supporters of CFNC came to each one of our 8 classrooms and read books, hosted parties, donated presents like bean bags, and brought school days filled with fun arts and crafts related activities to the children. We also held 5 parent workshops throughout the year, including one on being involved in your child’s education and kindergarten readiness. Without the wonderful individuals and organizations who helped us, the children would not have been able to have such an incredible, fun-filled first year at preschool.  Supporters like you are the reason that the children are able to have a quality preschool education that is not only enjoyable and filled with memorable moments, but will also properly prepare them for advanced success in kindergarten and the rest of their public school education. Because of supporters like you, you are building a promising, brighter future for Alexandria’s at risk children.
